Computational Techniques
Numerous hardware architectures are being developed to help reduce the computational cost of running complicated image analysis programs on extremely large images. The use of GPUs together with CPUs is being investigated as a potential solution. The use of leave-one-out attained an accuracy of 99.33%m while 10-fold cross validation achieved 98.4%. Processing time for a single image on the CPU decreased by a factor of 45 times, making this a practical method for reducing computational burden.
Standard computational systems have extremely long run times for analyzing large digital images, and the cost of the systems themselves can be prohibitive. The use of the Sony Playstation 3 to analyze the images is an attractive solution. The IBM Cell Broadbrand Engine used in the Sony Playstation 3 is 6x faster than most PCs, and costs much less than an image analysis server.
